Terracotta Firing Party

I went to visit a ceramist friend who had moved to a semi-rural area to begin construction on his dream house. The design theme would center on his hand-made terracotta tiles and décor. It had been in progress for more than a year (and will always be, he says, while he lives) and several of us had made our individual trips to visit and lend our skills and manual labor.

That weekend, we, his friends, were all out there in force: his fellow-ceramists, painters, sculptors, weavers and carvers; even the musicians were there – only to entertain the peons, they said, as their hands were too delicate for such common work (for which they had to dodge banana peels).

The first thing our friend had had built on his property, even before the foundations of his house, was a huge kiln. Our particular program that weekend was to help him load for firing all the pieces we had made and shade dried over the last two weeks.

The ceramists had made a large batch of one-of-a-kind terracotta floor and wall tiles, dozens of slip cast platters, and three terracotta jackets (with holes for the electricals) to dress up his crock pots.

The rest of us had made free standing terracotta sculpture, vases, ash trays, free form plates, mugs, masks and other wall décor.

It was hot and back-breaking work (even the musicians helped) but at the end of the day, singing around the bonfire, occasionally adding wood to the kiln, bellies full, we were as excited as our friend and looking forward to eventually seeing our finished work installed in his house.

Floor Design For A More Functional Kitchen

We all dream of a great and beautiful kitchen with appliances up to date and plenty of room for everything. But unfortunately, the reality is often different. Extension or adaptation of the kitchen is one of the most expensive purchases that each owner will have to make. In addition, it is better if we maximize ways to use what we already have.

However, we can always have a great-looking and functional kitchen on a budget. We can start with the floor. You can place an attractive area rug for a change. Choose a washable material such as acrylic and polypropylene. These materials are perfect for your kitchen. A beautiful area rug or carpet in oval blue can add a touch of comfort and even make the floor look a little bigger.

Once you have sorted through your kitchen and have found better opportunities to store your kitchen stuff, follow the principle rule of keeping everything neat and clean as possible. The less clutter you have around, the larger your kitchen looks.

There are only a few people who can really afford and invest in creating a magazine-inspired home. However, rather than breaking the bank, you can consider these home design ideas on a budget to get the same inspiring luxury look for home for less.

First, start getting rid of your clutter. Once you have cleaned the clutter and took the rest in an organized storage area, think of small details that can make your room look luxurious but for a minimal cost.

For example, hand-painted tiles make an impressive backsplash behind the sink. You can also use these accents in tile guest bathroom. Another option you can have would be to use high-quality travertine marble applied in smaller areas such as the lobby. You can complete the look of your lobby floor with a beautiful area rug, a luxury look for all your guests to see.

Great Floor Décor Ideas For Your Blue Bathroom

One of the most popular colors for the bathroom is blue. This is probably because blue is the color most often associated with water. You may be battling with bathroom blues, but luckily, you can still change its interiors according to your preference.

There are actually too many ways where we can decorate with the blue color scheme without changing much of your bathroom floor interior:

You can add for example some new colors that complement blue. You can start by putting some great area rugs on your floor. You can have a peach or pink oval rug. Tandem the color of your rug with new shower curtains as well. You can have a shower curtain in shell prints to make a “sea” theme.

As for your floor area, you do not have to replace your current floor completely. But if they’re white, you can add waterproofed stickers that are in the same color palette with your walls and decors.

Proper Floor Layout: The Answer For Mobility Issues At Home

Most people associate the mobility problems in older people, but the reality is that everyone at any age can cope with health problems or injuries that affect their ability to move. There are athletes who break a leg or an arm or there are also women in their late pregnancy- all these illustrate the many ways people can cope with walking difficulties. Therefore, accessibility is one of the key concepts of universal design, an important movement in architecture and decoration, which is behind the idea of aging in place .

One important factor to consider when it comes to home decorating and mobility issues is to get a proper floor layout. You can start by using an outdoor rug and a mat. Remember, that these carpets tend to be low, which is great for wheelchairs, crutches or other aids. Outdoor rugs are made from synthetic materials that are manufactured to withstand elements as compared o doormats made of fiber.

Although the ideal design for an aging in place is on the ground floor, some homeowners adapted the use of stairways or elevators. In this case if you have stairs, it should acquire handrails on both sides. You can also increase the transparency of the stairs, by adding contrast strips set on the top and bottom of the stairs and also placing color contrast between treads and risers. Households with multiple stories must have a pre-framed shaft (usually stacking closets above each other) or a scale of at least 4 feet wide, to make room for a chair lift.

Contemporary Designs For Floors

For those who favored 20th century Traditional designs, a Contemporary design for them would often get some bad rap. For these people, Contemporary design means sterile or boring. However, one should know that the reality goes beyond these stereotypes.

Contemporary style is all about clean, crisp, simple, elegant, and spacious. If there is anything that would upset traditional style lovers would be that this style is too spacious for those who prefer cluttering their spaces with furniture. For a Contemporary taste, space plays an integral element that serves as color and line in this kind of décor.

For a Contemporary floor design, you can have painted concrete floors or solid-colored tile. Carpet is not a good idea for achieving this kind of look in your home. You can use stunning area rugs to group your items well.
